Hot Water Service install

Jan 29 2014

Sometimes I despair at my rank amateurness!  I made a lovely recessed frame for my water heater to sit in.  Cut the angles, welded it up, painted it, fitted it to the truck. But damnation - I forgot to allow for the external cover which is about 5mm wider than the frame. Grrrrrr.

It's too late to remedy it, so I will have to cut the cover down by 5mm and put in some RivNuts to attach it instead of using the nicely manufactured hinge it came with. What a dill I am.

The water heater is a 22 litre Gas/240V storage heater by Suburban. Water temperature is set to 60 degrees, and you can use both gas and electricity for quicker heating, but I'd say mostly it will just used on gas only.

This is the nice frame I made, and you can see how 'tight' the factory frame is fitting inside my frame. I couldn't bear the thought of pulling it all out and making another one, so the next best thing is to downsize the cover.

This is how it's located on the inside, right under the gas cooker. This will make it easy to run the gas lines to these 2 items, and there's nothing else that is going to use gas (at this stage).  We'll have an external gas jack to hook up the outside BBQ, but that'll go straight from the gas bottles.

You can also see here the final location of the sink (last post - I was undecided which way it would go) and I've taken off the white protective plastic from the stainless bench top so it looks a lot better now.

I made a nice stainless steel plinth for the heater to sit on, so this gives a bit of storage space under the heater for something or other, and it is well strong enough to support the weight of the heater plus water over rough roads.

After all that mucking about I've removed the water heater tonight, as I want to paint the floorboards tomorrow so they are sealed in case of water spills etc.  I'll re-fit it all once the floor is painted.
