TV/DVD installed

Aug 05 2014

We have television & DVD!

A completely frivolous job, but I thought I'd install the flatscreen TV/DVD player.

I bought an extending arm to bolt to the wall, and set about making it more industrial.  The original bracket only had 2 bolts, so I upped that immediately to 2 bolts and 8 rivets and a bracket on the other side of the wall to brace it a lot more. The whole assembly is installed onto the wall with industrial strength adhesive.

I also built a "resting shelf" underneath to take the weight of the TV when travelling, so the arm is not holding 100% of the weight. There is a bungee cord/shock cord strap that clips the TV into the shelf so it can't jump out over rough roads. I made it from 1.2mm stainless steel (my favourite material at the moment) and angled it so it is easy to watch while in bed.

Sitting up in bed, it looks like this. You can't really see in the light of the LEDs, but there is a 6mm strap across the bottom of the shelf to hold the TV in place.

And it can be swung around almost 180 degrees so it can be viewed from the main cabin too.

You can see on the very left of this photo the bracing bracket that gives the swing arm more strength. Once the cupboards over the sink are installed, the strap will be hidden.

The TV is actually a marine model, produced by a NZ company called Fusion.  They have a whole range of marinised stuff, so things like waterproof speakers and waterproof head units (i.e. Radio/CD/USB/etc).  The TV runs natively on 12v so I don't need an inverter or mains power to run it.

Tomorrow I'll be back onto something more 'serious'!
